The conference Equity in Evidence: fusing lived experience and community knowledge into research to end human trafficking, organised by the Freedom Fund, the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery, and the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre, aimed to strengthen anti-trafficking research by integrating insights from individuals with lived experience and affected communities. From June 20th to 21st, 2023, participants engaged in nine panel discussions on critical topics, including aligning research with community priorities, ethical data handling, and the importance of survivor-led approaches. An Advisory Group informed the conference’s organisation to better address the needs of various participants, particularly those with lived experiences of modern slavery.
The conference provided valuable insights and recommendations for future events, emphasising improved engagement with people with lived experience and enhanced networking opportunities. Suggestions included minimising jargon, extending session lengths for deeper discussions, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research methods. The report stresses the importance of adapting research to local contexts and translating findings into actionable policies. Ultimately, the conference aimed to promote concrete actions for a more equitable and effective anti-trafficking research landscape.
