Preventing human trafficking of refugees from Ukraine

Report
May 9, 2022

The Freedom Fund partnered with La Strada International to elaborate Preventing human trafficking of refugees from Ukraine: A rapid assessment of risks and gaps in the anti-trafficking response. This document provides a rapid assessment of the risks of human trafficking and exploitation faced by refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. It identifies vulnerable groups, including women, children, and marginalised individuals, who are particularly at risk due to factors such as inadequate information, lack of access to protection schemes, and the chaotic nature of the humanitarian crisis. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated these vulnerabilities, making refugees more susceptible to trafficking and exploitation.

One of the main gaps in the current anti-trafficking response is that the scale of the crisis has overwhelmed the capacity of states to protect affected individuals. Recommendations include improving the registration process for refugees to ensure access to protection measures, addressing misinformation about legal rights, and enhancing support services in neighbouring countries. The report emphasises the need for coordinated efforts among governments, international organizations, and civil society to develop a comprehensive anti-trafficking strategy that prioritises the most vulnerable populations and mitigates the risks of exploitation.
