The report Qualitative Feedback from Community Participants, NGOs and External Stakeholders on Freedom Fund Interventions to Reduce the Prevalence of Bonded Labour in Northern India presents a qualitative assessment of the Freedom Fund’s interventions, conducted by the Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with Praxis India. Launched in 2014, the Northern India Hotspot program involved 19 partner NGOs and focused on community-based actions to combat bonded labour, child labour, and trafficking. The research methodology included a random selection of NGOs and hamlets, with interviews conducted among community members, NGO staff, and external stakeholders. A structured analysis framework was employed to evaluate the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability of the interventions.
Findings indicate significant changes in the prevalence of bonded labour and child labour, with increased community awareness and collective action. However, challenges remain, including the persistence of bonded labour among marginalised families and the need for targeted livelihood programs. The report emphasises the importance of addressing underlying socio-economic issues, enhancing the quality of education, and fostering community organization. The progress already achieved will benefit from a more focused approach to systemic change and collective responses for sustainable impact.
