Report
June 4, 2021

The study Shifting norms among customers who frequent adult entertainment venues in Kathmandu, Nepal: Results from a normative change campaign evaluates a normative change campaign aimed at addressing the demand for commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) within the adult entertainment sector in Kathmandu, Nepal. The University of Hong Kong‘s evaluation involved a repeated cross-sectional design with baseline and endline surveys targeting Nepali adult male customers of the adult entertainment sector (AES). A sample of 1,024 was achieved through a probability-proportional-to-size sampling method, including venue- and street-based populations.

The findings revealed significant insights into customers’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours regarding CSEC. The campaign effectively raised awareness and shifted some social norms, although the impact varied across different campaign components. Recommendations include the need for ongoing evaluation of similar campaigns to identify which messages resonate most with the target audience. Additionally, the study suggests that employing rigorous methodologies can enhance the understanding of CSEC dynamics, aiding governments and NGOs in developing informed strategies to combat exploitation in the future.
