The report The lived realities of sustained liberation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India: An evaluation of survivor experiences presents the evaluation conducted by the University of Nottingham of the Freedom Fund’s initiatives since 2014 aimed at combating human trafficking, particularly debt bondage and severe labour exploitation. Utilising a qualitative methodology, the study involved interviews with survivors, aged 8 to over 14, and employed data collection such as interview guides tailored to different age groups. The research aimed to understand the participants’ experiences, the support received from NGOs, and their perspectives on freedom and well-being.

The findings reveal significant improvements in survivors’ lives, highlighting the importance of education, vocational training, and emotional support in fostering resilience and independence. Participants expressed a newfound sense of agency and hope for the future. However, challenges remain in maintaining freedom and addressing ongoing vulnerabilities. The report recommends enhancing NGO services by focusing on holistic support systems, increasing community awareness, and advocating for stronger policy frameworks to protect at-risk populations.
