Liberated, but not yet free

In July 2022, the government of Nepal formally recognised the bonded labour of the Harawa-Charawa people and declared their liberation. However, debt, discrimination, and a lack of access to services and power limit their freedom to little more than paper.

Ending modern slavery means more than freeing individuals. It means shifting the systems that make exploitation possible.
