What we did

In 2018, the Child Labour Free Jaipur Initiative embarked on comprehensive interventions to stop child labour in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The Intiative focused on local children who drop out of school and work at home, and children trafficked from other states, to work in workshops.

With endorsements from the Rajasthan state and district level governments, as well as a wide range of businesses and industry associations, funding agencies and local community members, the Initiative began to target the root causes of child labour, especially in parts of the bangle, handicraft and apparel sectors. The Initiative built a dynamic presence in the neighbourhoods where most of the workshops that use child labour are located.

The hotspot partners enabled Rajasthan and Bihar governments to jointly set up systematic responses to assist the large number of children from Bihar that were rescued from Jaipur workshops. Partners also support government in the prosecution of  traffickers.

Child Labour Free Cities Handbook

This Handbook presents an effective model for increasing child protection in a defined geographic area. However, the concepts and strategies can be applied beyond child protection. They are relevant in other social development contexts, including worker rights, human trafficking in different forms, unsafe migration, gender-based violence and reproductive health, community empowerment, and strengthening government systems.

The Handbook is a practical document that supports the planning of programs and adaptation of existing work. The model’s design is built on the vital work of organisations that are creating Child Labour Free Zones globally.
