Welcome to the Movement building measurement toolkit. This page serves as a hub or library for all the tools and resources we have designed for measuring movement building.
The tools are organised into three key sections:

Data collection
Social Network Analysis research tool
This tool provides a framework for building a Social Network Analysis (SNA) survey to help hotspots assess their movement-building progress. While measuring movement activity is not an exact science, this tool is designed to roughly assess movements and categorise them into three development stages—emerging, growing or rooted. It is recommended to review this tool briefly when considering SNA research, and in more depth once a decision to conduct SNA has been made.
Case studies data collection tool
This tool is used to collect narrative case studies to identify a movement’s overall evolution, key milestones, strategies and outcomes. It is not a rigid checklist, but rather a guide to help steer the interview in ways that help paint a vivid picture of the movement’s growth.
Movement plots
This document contains a set of archetypal movement evolution narratives to guide analysis, sense-making and storytelling. They will help Freedom Fund-supported hotspots interpret how their movement is shifting across the three development stages (emerging, growing, rooted) using aggregated data.
Reporting and sensemaking template
This template is meant to synthesise key findings and support collective analysis, sensemaking and storytelling for any evaluation of Freedom Fund’s movement building work. It is to be paired with movement plots.
Presentation templates
This set of template resources provides a visual and structured reporting system to document each hotspot’s movement trajectory over the five-year period, covering baseline, midline and endline.
Kumu master presentation
This serves as the master presentation deck combining Kumu’s interactive map views with the more visual storytelling-focused editable slides in Canva.

Editable Canva slides
These editable slides allow evaluators to overcome Kumu’s limitations for visual storytelling outside of the interactive map views. This template can be used to create narrative slides, data highlights, infographics and more.
