In January, our NGO partner TSN in Bihar, north India, helped a 19 year old trafficking survivor gain a major legal victory against two traffickers, after a three year struggle for justice, during which her testimony enabled the rescue of her three sisters from slavery.
It’s the longest sentence TSN achieved against a trafficker, in one of their most complicated cases.
One of the traffickers, who had sold many women and girls into brothels, was found guilty of kidnapping girls, trafficking, and rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment and fines totalling Rs.92,000 ($1,370), while the other trafficker was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with fines of Rs.25,000 ($370). The judge ordered compensation for the victims.
The Freedom Fund’s Northern India hotspot is reducing trafficking, bonded labour and harmful child labour in two of India’s poorest states. Find out more about our Northern India hotspot here.
