Understanding support for boys who experience sexual exploitation in Nepal

Report
December 10, 2023

Boys who experience commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) are often overlooked, especially in countries like Nepal where most services focus on girls. A new study, published in Child & Family Social Work, led by the University of Hong Kong and funded in part by The Freedom Fund, shines a light on boys’ experiences in Kathmandu’s sex trade. Researchers spoke with boys who had exited or were still involved, to understand what help is available, what works, and what’s still missing.

This is one of the first studies to focus on boys affected by CSE in Nepal. It found that although support services are limited, help from NGOs played a crucial role in helping some boys leave the industry. Many of the boys identified as sexual minorities, highlighting a need for inclusive, long-term support. The findings will help NGOs and policymakers design better services that truly meet the needs of exploited boys.
