Lara Fatah joined the Freedom Fund as Head of Communications in 2023. Lara previously led the communications department at SEED Foundation, Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq, where she developed a number of awareness raising campaigns including the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, COVID-19 response and issues affecting children born of war.
Lara started out as a journalist in Iraq and went on to lead the research for the Kurdistan Memory Programme, which documented the 1980s genocide and modern Kurdish history. She has also run two start-up communications consultancies which included projects for the Malala Fund and the EU film festival in Iraq.
Lara holds an MA in Politics and Sociology from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc in Middle East Politics from SOAS, University of London. Lara is currently working on her first novel and has published a variety of articles in the international press on issues relating to Iraq and Kurdistan and is a global fellow of the London based PS21 Think Tank.
