Participatory Research, Planning and Evaluation Process in Nepal

Report
August 12, 2019

The paper Participatory Research, Planning and Evaluation Process in Nepal, commissioned by the Freedom Fund to the Institute of Development Studies, outlines the outcomes of a participatory action research initiative aimed at addressing community issues such as child marriage, dowry systems, and high-interest loans. The research involved local citizens, activists, and service providers in identifying key themes and developing pilot interventions without additional funding. The process included phases of engagement, evidence collection, and solution identification, with groups meeting regularly to build trust and collaboration.

Lessons from the initiative highlight the necessity of time and support for groups to understand their purpose as forums for community action rather than as platforms for seeking NGO assistance. Successful engagement requires an initial focus on general community issues to foster trust. The extended engagement phase, lasting seven months, underscored the importance of developing a clear sense of purpose. Overall, the research emphasizes that participatory approaches can lead to meaningful community-driven solutions when adequately supported and structured, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of development initiatives in Nepal.
