In June 2019, the Freedom Fund hosted the technical convening titled ‘Methodologies for measuring the prevalence of modern slavery’, which took place in London. This Summary report focuses on methodologies for measuring the prevalence of modern slavery, emphasising the critical need for robust data to inform effective interventions and track progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 8.7. Participants discussed various promising methodologies to identify hidden populations affected by modern slavery, including forced labour, child labour, and sex trafficking. The convening highlighted the importance of collaboration among researchers and stakeholders to enhance the quality and consistency of data collection.
Key recommendations include fostering government commitment to data collection and improving the sustainability of prevalence research. Governments must invest in high-quality local and state data, as this can significantly impact resource allocation and service provision for exploited populations. Additionally, the research community should incentivize governments to strengthen data sources and promote inter-departmental data sharing to enhance care for affected individuals. By addressing these challenges, the report aims to create a more unified and effective approach to combating modern slavery.
