Hiwot Ethiopia was established in 1995 as a youth club by fourteen dynamic young people concerned about the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and SRH hazards and wishing to make a positive contribution to combating the spread of the disease, particularly among young people. From these small beginnings, it grew and developed into an association, then a registered NGO, and is now re-registered as an Ethiopian civil society organization/NGOs.

Hiwot Ethiopia has been delivering a range of multi-year projects with a variety of local and international partners. Hiwot Ethiopia is a member of the African Gender Based Violence (GBV) Network, the vice chair of Population Health and Environment (PHE-Ethiopia), an active member of the Consortium for Reproductive Health Association (CORHA), and the and the secretariat and host organisation of the MenEngage Ethiopia Network.
