Maureen Karanja

Program Manager, Kenya

Maureen Karanja joined the Freedom Fund in October 2023, as the Program Manager of the Kenya hotspot program. Maureen is a development professional with over ten years of experience in managing complex project management cycles geared towards community strengthening initiatives aligned with the human rights-based approach. Maureen is a passionate supporter of children rights and is deeply dedicated to creating meaningful change in the lives of children.

Maureen has a background in a broad range of programs, including child protection and safeguarding, livelihoods development, youth skills development, sexual reproductive health and rights.

Prior to joining the Freedom Fund, Maureen worked as the Programme and Development manager at Tushinde Children’s Trust, a child and family focused charity working to protect the rights of vulnerable children and their place in the family. She also worked with Kenya Education Fund, a Kenyan based NGO that works relentlessly to ensure that underprivileged youth are able to access quality high school education. She has a love for storytelling and spent time volunteering with LitWorld, empowering children using stories as tools for social change.

Maureen has training in child-rights based programming, program management for development professionals and holds a master’s degree in project planning and management from the University of Nairobi and professional training in monitoring and evaluation from AMREF Africa.
