What is modern slavery?

Forced marriage

Forced marriage describes a marriage in which one or both parties, regardless of their age, are forced to marry without their consent.

An estimated 22 million people were living in forced marriage on any given day in 2021.

The situation is frequently exacerbated by conflict, abject poverty and humanitarian disaster, when desperation leads families to use early and/or forced marriage as a survival mechanism. The issue is severely under-reported and under-funded.

The Freedom Fund’s partners work to strengthen prevention mechanisms and promote community-led rejection of forced and early marriage; support people to leave situations of exploitation, recover and reintegrate; and influence policy and practices relevant to forced marriage.
