Announcing 2022 grantees for the Survivor Leadership Fund

The Freedom Fund is pleased to announce our grantees under the Survivor Leadership Fund in 2022.  Last year the Freedom Fund made 30 grants to organisations with lived experience leadership, providing unrestricted grants of $20,000 to each organisation to spend however they feel is needed to continue and grow their important work.

These survivor-led organisations – from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia – are each doing powerful work to end exploitation in their communities and to support and uplift the position of survivors.  The organisations are diverse in size and scope, addressing a range of issues including forced labour in textiles and fishing industries, domestic servitude, forced marriage and sexual exploitation.

Some of the organisations supported under the Fund are listed below:

BOLIVIA

Centro De Estudios Y Apoyo Al Desarrollo Local (Ceadl) (Bolivia)

Aim to enable youth, women and indigenous peoples to participate in an organized, democratic and equitable manner in various socio-political spaces to fully exercise their human and citizens’ rights. To strengthen people and social organizations in their participatory and advocacy capacities to build a democratic culture.

Foundation Una Brisa De Esperanza / A Breeze Of Hope Foundation (Bolivia)

Aim to prevent sexual violence against children and restore the lives of survivors through healing and justice.

Fundación Estrellas En La Calle (Bolivia)

Providing specialized care to vulnerable children, young people and families, through care and prevention programs and projects. To address the problems that children and families living in street situations experience.

BRAZIL

Cami Centro De Apoio E Pastoral Do Migrante (Brazil)

Aim to promote and protect fundamental human rights, gender equality, social integration, and prevent slave labor and human trafficking.

Coletiva De Mulheres Creuza Oliveira (Brazil)

Focus on strengthening and supporting black women domestic workers. For more black women domestic workers to know that they have rights, that they can organize themselves politically, that they must raise their voice against all forms of oppression.

Grupo De Trabalhos Em Prevenção Posithivo – Gtp+ (Brazil)

Guarantee the human rights of vulnerable populations through social, legal and political assistance for sex workers; direct action to contribute to HIV prevention and processes of violence and dehumanization; and also in technical support to other organizations.

Rede Costurando Sonhos (Brazil)

Protection of labor in the textile sector. Promote integration into work, access to occupation and income opportunities.

União Social De Imigrantes Haitianos – Usih (Brazil)

Supports Haitians in their search for shelter, work and decent living conditions. Assist with document regulation, support in family reunion requests, helping Haitians interact with the public administration, and supporting Haitians in irregular work situations or conditions analogous to slavery.

INDONESIA

Kabar Bumi (Keluarga Besar Buruh Migran Indonesia)

Acts as a space for advoacy for migrant workers and their families to obtain protection and conduct litigation and non-litigation advocacy.

Lidi Foundation (Indonesia)

Lidi’s mission is to provide knowledge on the reproductive health and build cross-community and local government to respond to child labor cases in the coastal and vulnerable areas of Lombok.

Sahabat Perlindungan Awak Kapal Dan Nelayan (Span) (Indonesia)

Serving and supporting fishing boat crews and fishermen to work safely, comfortably and prosperously, through education and training programs, and referral services for AKP, fishermen and their families.

Sekber’65 (Sekretariat Bersama ’65) (Indonesia)

The focus of Sekber’65 is identifying, serving, assisting victims of forced labor and acts of violence in the 1965/1966 tragedy in Indonesia to obtain the right to justice, the right to psychosocial recovery through trauma healing and the fulfillment of socio-economic rights as citizens.

Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia Dewan Pimpinan Cabang Lampung Selatan (Indonesia)

SBMI’s vision is formation of solidarity between Indonesian Migrant Workers (BMI) and their family members, including increased bargaining position of BMIs, protection of BMIs and their family members and their rights fulfilled, and handling of cases of BMIs.

Yayasan Bandungwangi (Indonesia)

Focusses on working with the government to support women and girls in prostitution through outreach, mentoring, counseling, training, health checks, economic development and other services.

Yayasan Embun Pelangi (Indonesia)

Improving the protection of women and children and the welfare of society based on human rights.

Yayasan Sakura Indonesia Al Jamaan (Indonesia)

The organization was founded by survivors on the premise that being part of anti-modern slavery work contributes to healing. The organization works on prevention of human trafficking, case responses and shelter management and policy advocacy.

Yayasan Srikandi Lestari (Indonesia)

Advocacy and campaigns on issues of slavery and child marriage, specifically regarding the right to a clean and healthy environment that is just and sustainable for marginalized communities, and providing assistance in cases of violence against human rights defenders and women human rights defenders

Yayasan Tapen Bikomi

Focus is on supporting vulnerable children-orphaned children, disabled children and children out of school.

MALAYSIA

Jaringan Pekerja Kontrak Kerajaan (JPKK) (Malaysia)

Conducts advocacy on labor rights to achieve better employment conditions for lower income workers in Malaysia.

Rohingya Project (Malaysia)

The mission of the Project is to create the foundation for a viable future for the stateless Rohingya by connecting them digitally to opportunities to learn, equip and empower themselves rather than be at constant risk of human trafficking or exploitation under difficult labor circumstances.

PERU

Asociación Mujeres Migrantes Maltratadas Perú

Aim to stop the mistreatment of migrant women, mothers, and partners of Peruvians who are trapped in servile marriages. Primary focus is to change the current immigration nationalization law, from a gender and human rights approach, to protect the rights of women and children.

Centro Yanapanakusun (Peru)

An autonomous organization of the Peruvian civil society that brings together a broad range of knowledge and experiences of a historical action with girls, adolescent children, young people, women, community organizations and allies, with whom we share the permanent fight for rights, equity, social and environmental justice.

THAILAND

The Whispering Willow (Thailand)

A non-profit organisation established in Northern Thailand, providing empowering programs through Education, Employment and Restoration. Advocates for the protection of women and children and aim to break the cycle of gender-based exploitation through comprehensive and collaborative support.
