The report Forced Labour Evidence Brief: Due Diligence and Transparency Legislation, was conducted by the University of Sheffield with the support of Humanity United and the Freedom Fund. The document highlights the endemic nature of forced labour and human rights abuses across various sectors of the global economy, noting that existing transparency legislation has failed to effectively influence corporate behaviour, leading to mere compliance without meaningful change.
The brief recommends that governments reform and strengthen transparency legislation while implementing mandatory human rights due diligence (mHRDD) laws. These laws would require companies to actively address adverse human rights impacts in their supply chains, supported by strong sanctions for non-compliance. The document emphasises the need for comprehensive action on transparency and due diligence fronts, advocating for collaboration with various stakeholders, including workers, unions, and civil society, to ensure effective law design and implementation that protects human rights.
