Report
December 19, 2021

The paper Estimating young women working in Kathmandu’s adult entertainment sector: A hybrid application of respondent driven sampling and venue site sampling investigates the prevalence of young women working in the adult entertainment sector (AES) in Kathmandu, Nepal, addressing the lack of reliable data on this hidden population. The study employed a hybrid methodology combining Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS), chosen for its robustness in estimating population sizes, and venue-based observations, which aimed to supplement the RDS findings and address its limitations. The sample was 600 women and girls aged 21 and under.

Approximately 45.22% of the surveyed population were young women, with a posterior mean point estimate of 1,334 individuals aged 21 and below. The study highlighted the challenges in obtaining accurate population size estimates due to the hidden nature of the AES and the potential biases in data collection methods. By utilizing a hybrid approach, the research provided valuable insights into the demographics of young women in the AES, contributing essential evidence for policymakers and NGOs working to combat human trafficking and exploitation in Nepal.
