The report Evaluation report on the results of the interventions to reduce the prevalence of bonded labour in Tamil Nadu was produced by the Institute of Development Studies and Praxis India for the Freedom Fund. The study utilised a mixed-methods approach, including life story analysis, a prevalence study involving over 2,600 households, and qualitative interviews with community members and stakeholders. The participatory research design emphasised community engagement and adaptive learning, allowing for real-time insights into the effectiveness of various interventions.
The findings indicate a significant reduction in bonded labour prevalence, from 56.1% to 11.1% in intervention communities, alongside improvements in education and community awareness. Recommendations emphasise the importance of sustaining community-based initiatives, expanding efforts to include migrant workers, and enhancing monitoring of long-term outcomes. The report advocates for continued investment in grassroots movements and the development of autonomous community organisations to ensure lasting change and address the systemic issues contributing to bonded labour.
