The report Impacts of the covid-19 pandemic on small-scale producers and workers: Perspectives from Thailand’s seafood supply chain examines the significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on small-scale producers and workers in Thailand’s seafood sector. Prepared by Oxfam and the Coalition for Ethical and Sustainable Seafood, the document is based on extensive consultations. The methodology involved interviews conducted in early April 2020 with representatives from civil society organizations, small-scale producers, and seafood companies across various regions in Thailand.
The findings reveal that the pandemic has severely disrupted the livelihoods of small-scale producers and workers, leading to halted purchases by intermediaries and a drop in demand for seafood products. Many workers faced challenges accessing social security benefits, and health risks were exacerbated by inadequate protective measures. The briefing note recommends that stakeholders, including national seafood exporters and global buyers, enhance support for these vulnerable groups by improving access to social security, ensuring proper health and safety measures, and facilitating market access for small-scale producers.
